Texas Freshwater Fisheries Center, Athens, Wednesday, Nov.
2, 9 a.m. - 3 p.m. - Jump into our bus to visit this
107-acre site with over 300,000 gallons of indoor/outdoor aquariums
displaying fish, waterfowl, alligators and amphibians. Enjoy an
educational and entertaining event that promotes freshwater sport
fishing, conservation and stewardship of aquatic resources in Texas.
See the Luncker Buncker where wide-mouth bass live and learn how
they protect the egg, sperm and six million fingerlings as they grow
large enough to be released to our lakes every year. We will depart
the Texins Activity Center at 9 a.m., enjoy the dive show at 11
followed by a tram tour of the outside hatchery. Then we'll eat at
Lake Athens Marina at our own expense and return to Texins about 3
p.m. Price is $20 for members and $22 for nonmembers, which includes

Homestead
Heritage Village Fair, Elm Mott, Saturday, Nov. 26, 8:30 a.m. - 4
p.m. - Join us as we visit the Homestead Fair. This
exposition of fine crafts and heirloom skills is a fun and
educational festival with activities for the entire family. Take a
self-guided walking tour of traditional craft workshops and a
working homestead. Help milk a cow, lend a hand at the old-fashioned
timber frame barn raising or watch a master craftsman fashion a fine
Windsor chair straight from a rough log. Watch a sheepdog work,
pottery making, blacksmithing, woodworking, quilting, weaving,
spinning, basketry, boot making, cheese making and more. Enjoy lunch
on our own at the Cafe Homestead, which features daily specials,
smoked barbecued brisket, deli-style sandwiches, pies and real
homemade ice cream. Take home a loaf of delicious, homemade, whole
grain bread, baked daily, or try the wood-fired brick oven breads.
Depart Texins Activities Center at 8:30 a.m., arrive at Elm Mott by
10 a.m. and return to TI about 4 p.m. Cost is $20 for members and
$22 for non-members. Register by Nov. 19.
"A Walk
thru Winter Wonderland "Musical, Arlington, Saturday, Dec. 10, 1:30
- 10:30 p.m. - Get in the Christmas spirit at Johnnie
High's musical revue at the Arlington Music Hall. They have a cast
of nine professional singers and an eight-member backup band and
perform all types of wholesome music: country, Christian and holiday
classics. Depart Texins Activities Center at 1:30 p.m., attend the
show at 3 p.m., eat next door at Babe's Chicken Dinner House on our
own after the show and then ride around the northwest Arlington
subdivision of Interlochen to see their spectacular Christmas
lights. Return to TI about 8:30 p.m. Cost is $29 for members and $32
for nonmembers. Register by Dec. 3.
Arlington Baptist
College (a.k.a. Top O' Hill Terrace casino) tour, Arlington, Friday,
Jan. 6, 10 a.m. - 4 p.m. - See this hidden gem, which was
one of the top attractions during the 2011 Super Bowl. This Texas
Historical Site became a casino in 1926 with escape tunnels, a
secret room for hiding the gambling paraphernalia during Texas
Ranger law enforcement raids, a tea room and a brothel. Bootleggers
used to run whiskey up the 1000-foot hill (highest point in Tarrant
County) during Prohibition. Over the next 20 years, the visiting
luminaries included Howard Hughes, Joe Louis, Bonnie & Clyde, Jack
Dempsey, Dean Martin, Frank Sinatra, Buster Keaton, W.C. Fields,
Gene Autry, Will Rogers, Hedy Lamarr, Lana Turner, Bugsy Siegel,
Tommy Dorsey, Mae West, Walter Winchell, Tom Mix and John Wayne.
Ginger Rogers, a local girl, used to dance here and Jack Ruby
gambled here. We will depart Texins at 10:30 a.m., eat lunch at
Catfish Sam's in Arlington at our own expense, enjoy a 90-minute
history lesson and a guided, easy-walking tour beginning at 1 p.m.
and return about 4 p.m. Cost is $15 for members and $17 for
nonmembers. Register by Dec. 30.
Dallas Museum of Art
Basement Tour, Dallas, Tuesday, Jan. 17 - Join us for an
once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to view the fabulous art stored in
the basement of the DMA. Close to 80% of the artwork owned by the
museum is not on display but stored safely for later use. Their
collection contains over 24,000 works of art spanning 5,000 years of
human creativity and is especially known for its arts of the ancient
Americas, Africa, Indonesia and South Asia; European and American
paintings, sculpture and decorative arts; and American and
international contemporary art. This will be a walking tour of the
DMA basement to see and hear about these fabulous treasures. Trip
details will be announced later.
