January 2012

New Year, New Publication, New Look

Starting later this month, TIAA will add a new electronic publication to our communications efforts. Please join us in welcoming Linda Stopani as Editor of our eCalendar which will be issued approximately the middle of each month and will list forthcoming TIAA events in chronological order. New coordinated graphics have been created for this publication as well as our existing publications, eNews and eNotes. eNews will continue to be published approximately the first of each month while eNotes will be published as needed. Please be aware that we maintain only one email list, so unsubscribing from any one electronic publication also unsubscribes from the others.

January TIAA Breakfast

All TI retirees and TIAA members are invited to meet at the Southern Recipe Café at 1381 W. Campbell Rd. in Richardson on Friday, Jan. 20 at 9:30 a.m. for fellowship and good food. Feel free to bring a friend. No RSVP needed.

Community Involvement Team

TIAA members are invited to make a difference in our community by participating in community involvement activities. Round-trip transportation is provided from Texins Activity Center. There is no fee for volunteering for the following TIAA-sponsored service projects. Contact the TIAA office at admin@tialumni.org or 214-567-8444 to register so we can inform you if plans change.

White Rock Center of Hope, 8:30 a.m. - 1:30 p.m., Tuesday, January 10 - The White Rock Center of Hope is a community coalition of individuals, civic and social organizations, and over 50 Member Churches united to provide emergency aid and steps toward self-sufficiency to their neighbors. Founded in 1988, 89% of all donations go to client services. They provide food, clothing, household goods and sometimes rent and utility payments to help people in the White Rock area make it through tough times. TIAA members will help stock their food pantry and sort clothes and household items for the resale shop and clothing closet. Volunteers will meet at Texins Activity Center and ride a bus to the climate-controlled warehouse. Afterwards, we will have lunch at our own expense and return to Texins about 1:30 p.m.

Meet & Greet the Troops at DFW, Tuesday, February 14 - With the Iraq war over and troops coming home, Meet & Greet the Troops is winding down. Please join us for one of the last opportunities to greet our active soldiers returning to the United States via DFW airport. This is truly a heartwarming event and one you don’t want to miss!

TIAA Travel Events

Arlington Baptist College (a.k.a. Top O’ Hill Terrace Casino) Tour, Arlington, Friday, Jan. 6, 2012 – See this hidden gem, which was one of the top attractions during the 2011 Super Bowl. This Texas Historical Site became a casino in 1926 with escape tunnels, a secret room for hiding the gambling paraphernalia during Texas Ranger law enforcement raids, a tea room and a brothel. Bootleggers used to run whiskey up the 1000-ft. hill (highest point in Tarrant County) during Prohibition. Over the next 20 years, the visiting luminaries included Howard Hughes, boxer Joe Louis, Bonnie & Clyde, Jack Dempsey, Dean Martin, Frank Sinatra, Buster Keaton, W.C. Fields, Gene Autry, Will Rogers, Hedy Lamarr, Lana Turner, Bugsy Siegel, Tommy Dorsey and his orchestra, Mae West, Walter Winchell, Amarillo Slim, Tom Mix and some guy called John Wayne. Ginger Rogers, a local girl, used to dance here and Jack Ruby used to gamble here (yes, the guy who shot Oswald). We will depart Texins at 10 a.m., eat lunch at Catfish Sam’s in Arlington at our own expense, enjoy a 90-minute history lesson and a guided, easy-walking tour beginning at 1 p.m. and return around 4 p.m. Cost is $15 for members and $17 for nonmembers.

DMA Basement Art Tour, Dallas, Tuesday, Jan. 17, 2012 – Want to view the other 90% of the fabulous art owned by the Dallas Museum of Art? This museum covers 370,000-square-ft. but that’s not large enough to display everything, hence the basement. Their collection contains over 24,000 works of art spanning 5,000 years of human creativity and is especially known for its arts of the ancient Americas, Africa, Indonesia and South Asia; European and American paintings, sculpture and decorative arts; and American and international contemporary art. So join us for a walking tour of the DMA basement to hear about these fabulous treasurers. We will depart Texins at 10 a.m., begin the docent-led tour at 11 a.m., enjoy lunch at the DMA café and return to TI about 3 p.m. Price is $10 for members and $11 for nonmembers.

Fort Worth Livestock Expo and Rodeo, Fort Worth, Saturday, Feb. 4, 2012 – Join us for this legendary event at the Will Rogers Memorial Center – going on for over 100 years. The show offers an atmosphere rich in culture and diversity as professional rodeo athletes compete for the championship by roping those calves, riding those bulls and broncs, and showing their great cutting horses. There will be lots of animals up close and personal, including: horses, cattle, pigs, sheep, poultry, pigeons, rabbits and even llamas. This is great for the whole family including a festive carnival/midway, unique shopping and hands-on educational experiences. It is a handicapped- accessible and non-smoking facility. We will depart Texins Activity Center at noon, ride a bus to Fort Worth, look around the grounds, eat lunch on our own, and enjoy the 2 p.m. show. We should return to TI around 5 p.m. Price is $35 for members and $38 for nonmembers including admission to the grounds, the rodeo and transportation.
