March TIAA Travel Events

WinStar Casino, Thackerville, OK, Thursday, March 10 - Join us as cultures collide at the WinStar World Casino, where five gaming plazas transform your experience into an international affair. Take in the sights of colorful fountains, hand-painted frescos and towering arches as you travel seamlessly through Paris, Beijing, Rome, Madrid and London. Enjoy a free breakfast buffet and/or visit one of the other WinStar restaurants. Travel to Beijing for a taste of Asian cuisine or visit the Midway Food Show for American fast-food favorites. Have your cake, and eat it too, at the Bread Basket Buffet or savor delicious Italian fare at Zar's. WinStar will pick us up at the Texins Activity Center at 8:30 a.m. and return us about 6 p.m. We usually have a full bus, so be sure to register early.

Allied Waste Recycling, Plano, Wednesday, March 16 - Take a tour of a state-of-the-art waste recycling plant. We will depart Texins at 9 a.m., tour from 9:30 to 11:30 and then eat at Golden Corral at our own expense and return to Texins about 2 p.m. There is some walking involved, but we will use the bus to go between buildings. Allied Waste will provide hard hats and goggles. We need to wear closed-in walking shoes; no open-toe or open-heel shoes are permitted. Cost is $10 for members and $11 for nonmembers. Please register by March 9.

Texas Civil War Museum, Fort Worth, Thursday, March 24 - This world-class museum is a rare partnership containing private and public collections making it the largest Civil War museum west of the Mississippi River. We will start with the video “Our Homes -Our Rights -Texas in the Civil War” which explains that this four-year war took the lives of 600,000 people, many of them Texans. The artifact-rich museum houses three very fine collections. There are more than 4,000 artifacts and 60 flags, which will rotate on exhibit. One wing is devoted to the military with galleries for the Infantry, Cavalry, Artillery, Navy and Medical branches. There is a textile collection from the 1860s to the 1890s that is unbelievable. The 250 dresses look as if you can take them out of the display case and wear them. Most of the artifacts were given to the collection by the veterans or their families. We will leave Texins at 9 a.m., tour the museum at 10, eat lunch at our own expense at Ryan's and return about 3 p.m. Cost is $14 for members and $16 for nonmembers. Please register by March 17.
