July 2010

Summer Art Show and Open House - Aug. 7

You and your family are invited to attend the On My Own Time (OMOT) Art Exhibit and Open House at the Dallas Texins Activity Center (Expressway Site) on Saturday, Aug. 7 from 2 to 5 p.m.  Enjoy the art on display from active TIers and retirees, and cast your vote for the "People's Choice." As a bonus, the facilities of Texins will be available for guests and their families to use throughout the day at no charge. Come early and try out the fitness equipment, indoor and outdoor tracks, swimming pool and other facilities available at Texins. Refreshments will be available during the open house and there will be drawings for door prizes. Enter at Gate #6 on TI Boulevard and turn right at the first stop sign. Parking is available adjacent to the Texins Activity Center. Go to the TI Alumni Newsletter 2Q 2010 to see more details about the OMOT art exhibit and open house on Page 1 of the issue. For hours of operation and other information on Texins, go to www.texinsactivitycenters.com. Registration is not required.

Art Show Registration Deadline Extended to July 15

The deadline for registering to submit art for the OMOT Art Exhibit has been extended to July 15, so it's not too late to be part of the competition. For more information and how to register, go to www.tialumni.org/omotas/ or call the TIAA office at 214-567-8444.

Shoes for Orphan Souls - July 14

TIAA volunteers can help process donated shoes for orphans and at-risk children throughout the world. The activities might include cutting off price tags, "rubber banding" shoes together, sorting shoes, or counting and packing shoes in shipping boxes.  Volunteers will meet at Texins Activity Center at 8:45 a.m. and ride a free bus to the air-conditioned warehouse. At 12:30 p.m., we'll decide whether to go to lunch together or to return immediately to Texins. If you'd like to help give a child their first pair of new shoes, call Jessica Stewart at 214-567-8444 by July 7 to register. For more information, go to www.tialumni.org/cit/.

Entrepreneurship Seminar - July 28

TIAA, the Ex-TIer Network and the UT Dallas Retiree Association will sponsor a free seminar from 1 to 3:30 p.m. on Wednesday, July 28, in Collinwood I at the Plano Centre, Plano. Is Entrepreneurship Right For You and What Resources Are Available will provide practical ideas for starting or expanding a small business or consulting firm, and demonstrate the technology resources available locally or on the worldwide web for your business or self development. The seminar will also include a presentation by a patent attorney on protection of intellectual property. To register for the seminar, call the TIAA office at 214-567-8444, press "2", and leave your name and name of anyone else attending with you, and your telephone number by July 21.

TIAA Volunteer of the Year Nominations

Do you know someone who consistently volunteers to help others? Last year TIAA established an annual Volunteer of the Year Award to honor a TIAA member who does an outstanding job of giving back to our community. We are soliciting suggestions for an appropriate recipient of this year's award. If you know of someone you think is worthy of this honor, please contact TIAA at 214-567-8444 or admin@tialumni.org. A plaque will be presented to the honoree at the TI Retiree Luncheon on November 11.

TI Weekend at Dallas Zoo - July 16-19

Dallas-area retirees can show their badges and receive free admission for themselves and as many as five guests during Tech Smart Big Heart's TI Family Weekend at the Dallas Zoo from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on July 16-19. Zoo visitors will have the opportunity to experience Giants of the Savanna, the biggest new exhibit to open at the Zoo in 20 years. The 11-acre exhibit takes zoo guests on safari as they experience and learn about giraffes, elephants, lions, cheetahs and many other African species. If you don't have a retiree badge (or can't find it), print out a copy of this eNews to gain entry.

Alumni Groups Update

To make it easier for individuals to link up with alumni groups, we have consolidated information about the groups into a single, online posting at www.tialumni.org/groups/. This larger, up-to-date listing will also be published in our quarterly newsletter. Most groups meet monthly, but the frequency of meeting ranges from every other week to once a year. The list includes over a dozen groups in the greater Dallas area and, for the first time, four groups that meet in locations outside the Dallas area as well as three groups that meet in cyberspace. Although the listing is large, we strongly suspect that there are many other groups and we would like to include them. If you know of any group of former TIers who would welcome other former TIers, please contact us at groups@tialumni.org or 214-567-8444.

Richardson Corporate Challenge

TI is once again going for gold in the Olympic-style City of Richardson Corporate Challenge, and it has asked for TIAA participants. The competition, which starts Aug. 20 and runs through early October, includes more than 20 athletic and non-athletic events - from soccer, dodgeball and badminton to horseshoes, darts and billiards. Participants compete against teams from various Dallas-area companies. Proceeds from the Corporate Challenge benefit the Special Olympics Texas. Participating organizations raised $118,000 for Special Olympics in 2009. If you are interested in volunteering or competing in the 2010 challenge, contact Tim Taylor at timt@ti.com or Lara Hussain at lara@ti.com.

Let's "Do" Breakfast - July 23

Hate to cook breakfast? Tired of oatmeal? Need a reason to get out of the house? Miss your TI friends? Well, we agreed and last month held our first TIAA-wide breakfast. Our second such event will be on Friday, July 23, at 9:30 a.m. once again at Chubby's Family Restaurant, 11331 Northwest Hwy, Dallas. Chubby's has two breakfast specials for only $3.99 + tax & tip. Just fellowship and food and maybe some discussion on when and where to meet next. There's no need to make a reservation; just look for us in their meeting room, which has been reserved for TIAA.

TIAA Q&As

We are starting a new feature in our monthly eNews publication.  If you have a question about TIAA or our website that would be appropriate in this newsletter, please send it to communications@tialumni.org.

Q: How can I locate a former TIer?
A: You can find this information from our website. (The website lists only that information permitted by the former TIer. Please remember this is personal data and do not use it for solicitations, etc.)

  1. Click Search for members located under Member Services at the top of the screen. (This page is accessible to members only; login is required.)
  2. In the Search Information area, enter only the vital info (leaving all of the other boxes blank): If you want to search for a particular person, enter the first name in the First Name box and the last name in the Last Name box. (If you are not certain how to spell either name, enter the first few characters and a "fuzzy" search will return every former TIer whose name begins with those characters.  If you only remember the first name, just enter that and all of the former TIers with the same first name will be listed.)
  3. Press Enter.

New Lifetime Members

Lewis Aubrey, Michael Bartlett, Kathryn Collins, Nancy Jenkins, Laurinda Ng, Terry Thompson, Stephen Watts and William Wisseman recently became Lifetime Members of TIAA in June. Over a quarter of TIAA members now hold lifetime memberships.

TIAA Annual Meeting Slide Show

David Drake took pictures at the TIAA Annual Meeting at UT Dallas and the tour of the Natural Science and Engineering Research Lab on May 18 and Ronnie Brandenburg has created a slide show. Enjoy.

Upcoming TIAA Travel Events

America the Beautiful - Saturday, July 10 - Join us on a trip to hear the wonderful patriotic musical America the Beautiful at Granbury Opera House. Depart Texins at 10 a.m. for Granbury to attend the 2:30 p.m. matinee performance. Before the show, we will dine on our own at a restaurant in Granbury (several are within walking distance of the opera house) or browse the quaint shops on the square. We will return about 6 p.m. Show tickets and bus transportation are $35 per member or $39 per nonmember. There are only a couple of seats still available on a first-come, first-served basis.

Waco Tour - Monday, Aug. 9 - Join us on a luxury bus to visit the Texas Ranger Hall of Fame and the Baylor University Mammoth Site. The Rangers have a heritage that began with the earliest settlements in Texas. They have been compared to other world-famous law enforcement agencies, such as the FBI, Scotland Yard, and the Royal Canadian Mounted Police. The museum features historic Ranger badges, Purvis Thompson machine gun and fabulous displays of Ranger memorabilia. Next, we'll create some memories on the river as we dine at Buzzard Billy's, which has been recognized year after year for incredible dishes including seafood, steaks, pastas, and outstanding desserts. Then we'll tour the largest known concentration of prehistoric animals at the Mammoth Site, where 68,000 years ago a group of Columbian Mammoths were caught and killed in a mudslide. Their remains were hidden beneath the earth in the Bosque River basin until 1978. The site was kept a secret until 2007 when the Waco Mammoth Site was opened. The bus will depart Texins at 9 a.m. and return about 6 p.m. Cost of $32 per member and $36 per nonmember includes transportation and entry fees. Please register by Aug. 2.

Contact Jessica Stewart at admin@tialumni.org or 214-567-8444 to register. Each TIAA member is invited to participate and may bring one guest at the member price. Others may join us at the nonmember price. Payment is due seven days prior to event to reserve your place on the bus. Make check payable to TIAA and mail to TIAA, PO Box 740181, Dallas, TX  75374.
